Condo Make Overs - The Living Room

Many of us who grew up in a large home with gardens have had to adjust to cramped living quarters due to current economic climate.  If you do live in a condo or rent a condominium which is a little cramped, its nothing get depressed about!

With good organization, designing, color, lighting and a little innovation, everything can be made to look spacious and beautiful whether you live in a cramped area of Chicago condo community, gorgeous Florida condo complex or a small California condo gated community.

In today’s world, importance lies in making most of the space that you already have, rather than finding more space.  If you do own a condo, it makes sense to stay put till property prices stabilize. If you are planning to buy one, do it now! The prices are down by 40%.

Here a few ideas to make your condo family room appealing and spacious, a place where you can truly let down your hair when you come back from a grueling day!

Use a pale color scheme like light pastel shades, white, off white or creams throughout your walls and furniture. While pale colors and small all-over patterns recede, reflect light and make the space look bigger. Bright colors and contrasting colors a an absolute no-no.

Flood your living room with light to make it spacious. The primary lighting fixtures(tubelights) are essential for daily household chores like cooking and reading; but for dramatic effects, shades and shadows, secondary lighting(spotlights, dimmers, uplighters)is extremely important.

Get rid of all extra furniture and use either low sitting arrangements, wrought iron furniture or a sofa cum bed if your room is doubling up as bedroom too. Laminate flooring with a light color is not only aesthetically appealing, but gives a spacious effect also.

Forget rugs since make the room look smaller. Furnishing, cushions should be part of color scheme. Even though you have not actually pushed out the walls or raised the ceiling, you can use color, texture and pattern to create that effect.

Hang a mirror on one side of the wall and bookshelf on the other side with small paintings on either side. If you are fond of flowers use transparent glass vases instead of color ones.

If you have a kitchenette next to a small living room you can put up matching pale net/lace curtains on the windows of room and kitchen. Use white tiles as they are easy to clean and reflect light. Keep your kitchenette well lighted and simple with only essential items.
