Situated on the western side of Long Island Sound and within close proximity to Pelham and Eastchester Bays is City Island. City Island New York is brimming with the sights and sounds of nature surrounded by a mass of blue waters.
Referred as Minefer’s Island back in the 1600 - 1700s, City Island was once the home to the Siwanoy’s, a Native American tribe. A New York native Benjamin Palmer later bought the island in 1761 in hopes of turning it into a port where nautical stores and ships would dwell. He also had plans for City Island to include various schools, homes and churches as well so that residents would enjoy the best of both worlds.
Needless to say, Palmer’s plan was immediately shelf when the American Revolution occurred.Some 60 years later Palmer’s plan was revived again and it saw the influx of shipbuilders who moved into the territory to set up their businesses.
Seeing City Island today is exactly how Palmer envision it to be coupled with modern day additions. Lovely Victorian styled homes from the 1800s can still be seen and an active aquatic lifestyle with thriving yacht and boating businesses is in full swing.
As a resident of City Island, there is always something to see and do so that there is no chance of getting bored. One can attend the several community activities that are staged by the City Island Chamber of Commerce or enjoy a pleasurable dining experience at one of the many restaurants on the island. City Island is also known for its historic buildings, art galleries and museum and craft shops.
Some of the best schools, banks and grocery stores are also on the island. One reason to buy a NY condo is that you will have waterfront properties.
