A neighborhood located in the southwestern section of New York City’s Bronx borough is known as Morrisania. From the north as one travels in a clockwise direction, are its boundaries: the Cross Bronx Expressway, Crotona Park North, Crotona-Prospect Avenues, 161st Street, and the Grand Concourse. Bronx Community Board 3 includes the neighborhood of Morrisania.
The name Morrisania (pronounced more-ih-SAN-ee-ah"), is not commonly used to identify the neighborhood. Rather, like the Mott Haven/Port Morris neighborhood, that area is usually referred to as the “South Bronx”. Few people would probably recognize the actual name of Morrisania, even though this and other neighborhoods are so named and, further, are delineated by boundaries.
The area that houses the Southern Boulevard shopping district is known as East Morrisania. This neighborhood, along with the neighborhood of Longwood, which is located to East Morrisania’s south, was once known as “Fort Apache”. However, after the movie “Fort Apache, the Bronx” earned the neighborhood a not-so-welcome notoriety, its name was changed to East Morrisania.
Crotona Park East is a subsection of the neighborhood of Morrisania. Former New York Mayor Ed Koch calls Crotona Park East home, although it is stated that he was raised in the neighborhood of Morrisania. Morrisania/East Morrisania/Crotona Park East, like other neighborhoods in the Bronx borough are seeing many changes. Attempts at “gentrification” have led city and community officials to come up with new and varied ways to make these neighborhoods more attractive to those people who may wish to relocate.
Some of these efforts include the introduction of new names, which may project a more positive image, such as “SoBro” for “South Bronx” and its surrounding neighborhoods (including Morrisania and it’s surrounding areas), and the “ousting” or removal of old names (i.e., “Fort Apache”) with negative connotations. Additionally, these and other neighborhoods are attempting to reach more people through the building of condominium properties, or the renovating of existing properties into condominium properties.
It is hoped that by offering different options in residential occupancy, such as condo living, that individuals or families seeking different locations in which to live will be attracted to some of the neighborhoods such as Morrisania. Because living in a NY condo is enjoyable, a variety of choices in the size and layout of individual units, as well as varying price ranges are available. New York residents wanting a change in living conditions are better able to make informed decisions as to what best suits their needs.
One-bedroom, one-bath units offer the single person or just-married couple a wise choice. The small or growing family will want to look into the many two-bedroom, two-bathroom units that are available in N.Y. condo properties. Additional features such as enhanced security measures, on-site parking, and access to other services also make N.Y. condo living more amenible.
