The southernmost neighborhood in the area known as the “South Bronx” is Mott Haven/Port Morris. This neighborhood is located in that area of the South Bronx that lies below 149th Street, between the East River and the Harlem River. The residents of Mott Haven/Port Morris are more inclined to refer to the neighborhood as the “South Bronx”. However, at one point in time, Mott Haven was identified by a group of social workers as a location where a “pocket of poverty” existed. The social workers incorrectly called that portion of Mott Haven “South Bronx”, thus attaching what could be referred to as a “stigma” to the name “South Bronx”.

As a result of this effort to project a more positive image than that which is considered when “South Bronx” is used, the name “SoBro” is being introduced and used to define this area. This is probably an attempt to capitalize on the images that come to mind when one thinks of the “SoHo” area of Manhattan.
Port Morris is that area of the Mott Haven/Port Morris neighborhood that lies south and east of the Major Deegen and Bruckner expressways. This area has recently seen an influx of artists and professionals moving into the brownstones that are still prevalent in the community. The fact that those individuals of artistic bent, and those who are or consider themselves to hold jobs in the area of professional employment are moving to such areas as Mott Haven/Port Morris, has given rise to the renovation of structures, such as the brownstones which can still be found in the area. As a result, many of the structures have been converted into condominium properties, with individual units as varied as the artist or professional who may choose to occupy one of them.
The artist can most certainly benefit from a one-bedroom, one-bath unit. The artist can convert all or a portion of the living area into a studio, or may even choose to divide the living area in such a way that it can be utilized as living space and bedroom quarters; thus freeing up the area intended for the bedroom so that it can be used to inspire the artist’s creativity. The professional will more than likely find one of the two-bedroom, one-bath units perfect for his or her needs, as well as those of the professional’s family, should that be the case.
Price ranges that can accommodate the artist or the professional, as well as the amenities offered by N.Y. condo living are further selling points. Services such as groundskeeping, are usually included in the almost always moderate maintenance fee. Such a “perk” will only serve to give the artist more time to devote to his craft, while the professional will gladly utilize the time he or she might have otherwise spent in property upkeep in furthering their career or spending quality time with their family.
